Chainsaw Milling

What is Chainsaw Milling?

Chainsaw milling is the process of cutting logs into usable timber using a chainsaw. It is a quick, efficient and very cost-effective technique of turning fallen trees or logs into usable timber. Chainsaw Milling is especially useful in remote locations or areas where access to a sawmill is limited as the equipment required can be transpaorted and the milling done where the trees have fallen saving the hastle of having to transport the trees to a sawmill.

What is the Chainsaw Milling process?

The process of chainsaw milling begins with selecting the log or tree to be milled. The log should be straight and free of knots or rot. Once the log is selected, it is placed on a flat surface and squared up using a chainsaw. This step is crucial in ensuring that the final pieces of timber are straight and of consistent thickness.

The chainsaw mill, which is a special attachment that fits onto a chainsaw, is attached to the chainsaw. The mill has two main parts, a guide rail and a cutting blade. The guide rail is attached to the log and provides a stable surface for the chainsaw to follow. The cutting blade is attached to the chainsaw and is used to make cuts in the timber.

The chainsaw is started and the cuts are made, starting from one end of the log and working towards the other. The depth of the cuts depends on the thickness of the timber desired. Deeper cuts result in thicker pieces of timber, while shallower cuts result in thinner pieces. It is important to keep the chainsaw at a consistent depth throughout the cut to ensure that the pieces of timber are of consistent thickness.

As the cuts are made, the log is gradually reduced in size. After the first cut is made, the log is rotated and the process is repeated until the entire log has been milled. The resulting pieces of timber can then be removed from the log and further processed as needed.

One of the benefits of chainsaw milling is its portability. Since the process is done using a chainsaw and a portable mill attachment, the entire operation can be easily moved from one location to another. This makes it ideal for those who want to produce their own timber in remote locations or areas where access to a sawmill is limited.

Another advantage of chainsaw milling is the speed at which it can produce usable timber. Compared to traditional sawmilling methods, chainsaw milling can produce usable timber in a fraction of the time. This makes it a great option for those who need to produce large amounts of timber quickly.

Chainsaw milling also allows for a high degree of flexibility in the types of timber that can be produced. Different types of cuts, such as quarter sawn or live-edge, can be produced using a chainsaw mill. This provides the ability to produce a variety of unique and distinctive pieces of timber that cannot be easily produced using other methods.
